College-aged students of color said they believe race will affect their future job opportunities in the business world.
Students of color share concerns about underrepresentation in the business industry
Sebastijan Skoko said he fears that job opportunities from the business world, after graduation, will only be viewed as a “diversity hire” rather than a “merit hire” to others.
“The idea that you can only get a job in this weaker field of applicants is a little off-putting,” Skoko, 20, said. “Every time someone asks me what I’m doing this summer, and I tell them, their immediate response is, ‘Oh, did you get it through a diversity program?’”
Skoko, a Boston native, said those comments can be a slap in the face. Skoko secured an internship with Goldman Sachs this summer as a Securities Analyst.
“It’s crazy because some assume, I could never apply through the regular applicant portal and be successful,” said Skoko, a member of the University of Chicago’s Phoenix Funds finance club.
